Southampton has been revealed as one of the UK’s independent publishing hotspots according to new data released by Amazon.

The city was ranked fifth in the country, finishing ahead of Portsmouth, Plymouth and Edinburgh.

The data is based on the number of authors across the country using Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) programme.

Southampton author AJ Waines, who is one the UK’s bestselling independently-published authors, said: “I was a psychotherapist for fifteen years before I had a go at writing my first novel.

"Having worked with ex-offenders from high-security institutions, I’d gained a rare insight into criminal psychology – perfect for inspiring psychological thrillers!

"The great thing about writing is that you can start at any age – I’d never attempted it until I was in my 40s.

"I’m now making a career out of my passion, joining the growing category of bestselling ‘hybrid’ authors, who are both traditionally and independently published. Through KDP, I’m selling eBooks in English to readers in 13 countries, an achievement I never thought possible.”

It follows the news that a Hampshire teenager has realised her writing dream by publishing her first book.
