A MAN has been arrested following a spate of thefts from cars and vans across Hampshire.
The 35-year-old was arrested in connection with thefts from vehicles in the Eastleigh area and remains in custody.
Hampshire Police confirmed that there have been 28 thefts from vehicles in the central Eastleigh area in just one month.
Officers have now stepped up patrols and are urging residents to be vigilant after finding that several of vehicles targeted were insecure.
A force spokesman said that five cars were found unlocked in just one night.
As previously reported, more than 20 vehicles were targeted by thieves in Hedge End, West End, Botley and Bursledon in March.
Civic bosses have urged motorists and householders to be aware and report anything suspicious.
Eastleigh councillor Wayne Irish said: “Everyone is in place to do their job and make sure residents are safe.
“ I am sure they’ll work hard to catch the culprit.”
Following the incidents, police have released security tips for vehicle-owners.

Fit an alarm
Secure wheels using locking wheel nuts.
Residents are asked to report suspicious activity to the police on 101 or anonymously via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
