It’s the nomadic music shop that’s not just shifted its way across town over the years, but has changed it’s target audience too.

Originally positioned in the Bargate, HMV first made it’s move in 1982 when it travelled around the corner to 19 Hanover buildings - a site over three times larger than the original.

To mark the opening of the new store, Boy George of Culture Club, and Steve Strange from Visage were signing autographs.

Police and security guards were taken by surprise with the amount of fans who turned up, and for a while the street was blocked off as barricades had to be put in place. Several young fans were treated for minor injuries.

Only 12 years later and the store was on the move once again, this time to it’s current location in 56-58 Above Bar Street.

The move enabled HMV to offer Southampton shoppers something fresh by branching into the rapidly growing video and computer games market.

Sir Bob Geldof performed at the opening in July 1994, playing songs to a crowd of a couple hundred.

Since then the store has played host to a variety of acts including Feeder, Gary Numan, Status Quo, Peter Andre and more.
