A NURSE and paramedic in Southampton have been rewarded with prestigious awards.

The team at the minor injuries unit at the Royal South Hants Hospital is celebrating the awards scooped by two of its members.

Mark Friend was named nurse of the year while Adam Taylor, paramedic practitioner, was recognised in the Great Care category at Care UK’s national healthcare awards 2017.

The two beat off competition from thousands of healthcare professionals across the country to lift two trophies at the awards ceremony in London.

Mark said: “I aim to always achieve the highest standard of patient care and ensure that the patient has the best experience whilst within the unit.”

Thousands of medical and administrative professionals from across the country were eligible to enter the competition and the team beat entries from GP surgeries, walk-in centres, 111 urgent care services and prison healthcare teams.

Hospital director Penny Daniels said: “I know I have a dedicated team of exceptional professionals but I am delighted that their skill and commitment has been recognised at a national level.

“Mark’s commitment to his patients and his team is exemplary. He is inspiring, positive and committed and popular with patients and colleagues alike. Adam is a remarkable paramedic. He is highly skilled, calm, compassionate, confident and competent.

“He has a wonderful manner with patients and if I were ill I would want him to look after me and I am a very fussy nurse!”

Ms Daniels is now hoping that the national recognition will encourage more people to use the service, aimed at relieving pressure on A&E.
