POLICE are investigating the cause of fire at a Southampton flat.

Firefighters were called to a ground floor flat in Cranbury Avenue in St Mary's where the fire had broken out on Sunday afternoon.

Police officers were on the scene, guarding the flat.

A  resident who lives on Cranbury road and did not wish to be named said: "I was at the procession. My neighbour told me to come because there was a fire next door.’

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "It was a fire in a ground floor flat, the cause is doubtful and the fire involved bedding."

"It happened at 1.56pm, the firefighters have now come away from it but the police are still there guarding it."

Two crews from St Mary's Fire Station were called to the scene. The fire did not spread to any neighbouring properties.
