MORE than 1,600 people took part in the 10k race, ran as part of the first Southampton marathon event held in the city in over 30 years.

James Hughes finished in first place after completing the course in 36 minutes and 45 seconds.

He was closely followed by William Bryan who crossed the finish line just four seconds after him and Dan Slayford who finished with a time of 36 minutes and 57 seconds.

Charlotte Bowsher was the first woman to complete the 10k route after 38 minutes and 57 seconds. Laura Brenton was closely behind, finishing with a time of 39 minutes and 12 seconds while Alice Bowles completed the race in third, for the women, finishing 43 seconds later.

Matt Le Tissier, Saints legend, finished his 10k in 57 minutes.

He told the Echo: "I'm pleased with my time, I was aiming for under an hour.

"It's a brilliant event for the city and it's a shame it took so long to get the full marathon back started again.

"I've left my fundraising in the hands of Ronald McDonald house, but it's a fantastic event for the city and the atmosphere is wonderful here today."
