THOUSANDS took part in the Southampton half marathon.

Matthew Bennet crossed the finish line first with his hands held high and a proud look on his face after completing the 13.1 mile route in one hour, 12 minutes and 26 seconds – with an average pace of 10.8mph.

Simone Dailey was the first female to cross the finish line, completing the race in one hour, 20 minutes and nine seconds. She had an average pace of 9.8mph.

David Broadley came second after one hour, 13 minutes and 44 second time while Aiden Lennan was shortly behind him, in third, finishing after one hour, 14 minutes and 35 seconds.

The second woman to cross the finish line was Ellie Monks after one hour, 20 minutes and 41 seconds. In third, Kathy Bailey was not far behind completing the race after one hour, 22 minutes and seven seconds.

More than 3,700 people took part in the run which started out at Palmerston Park at 10.30am and finished at the Guildhall Square.

Aiden Lennan, a runner for IKEA and the Rose Road Association, beat his target by two minutes.

Aiden said: "It's a brilliant atmosphere out here, people lining the streets all the way!

"I'm very pleased with my time, what a brilliant day."
