HUNDREDS of children took to the stage last night in a bid to wow judges at the Southern Junior Rock Challenge final.

Southampton's Calmore Junior School were victorious and earned a place in the 2018 Rock Challenge final.

The school performed interpretative dance routines themed on Anne Frank and World War Two.

Romsey school, Halterworth Community Primary, just missed first place with their interpretation of the tale Maleficent.

The school told the story of the fairy queen who was betrayed by her sweetheart.

Wellow Primary School, Solent Junior School and St Paul's Church of England Primary School - were placed third, fourth and fifth place respectively.

Other schools who took part were Foundry Lane Primary School, Waverley Abbey Church of England Junior School, Rustington Community Primary School, Orchards Junior School and Swallow Dell Primary.

The event, which was held at Portsmouth Guildhall attracted more than 1400 people.

The competition was sponsored by Ansvar Insurance, Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team and various other organisations.

Be Your Best Foundation Director and first place prize presenter, Glyn Wright said: “An absolutely incredible evening, showcasing the best of young peoples’ talents and skills.

"The parents and teachers must be so proud, the children have been amazing. Every school has shone tonight.”

Third place prize presenter from Zeamu Music, Sara Ackworth, said:“It has been a privilege to be sponsoring Rock Challenge.

"The performances tonight were amazing, a very high standard and all the children involved should be congratulated and be very proud of themselves.”

For the next two nights, Hampshire secondary schools and colleges will be competing for a place in the Senior Southern Rock Challenge finals which will take place on April 29.
