Crews tackled the blaze which is believed to come from one of the fryers at the Small Fry Fish & Chip shop on Lodge Road.
Staff and customers were evacuated from the shop as well as residents in the flat above.
The road had been closed between Cambridge Road and Earls Road, but reopened at 13.40.
Four crews were called to the scene from St Mary's and Redbridge fire stations, at 12.42am.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said the fire has been put out, but crews remain on the scene to clear the smoke and make the site safe.
Bholesh Kakiya, 43, is the owner of the building, and rents the building to Richard Gillespie, who runs the fish and chip shop.
Bholesh Kakiya: "What can you do, you can't reverse time. Staff called the fire department and customers and staff had to evacuate the building.
"I thought it might be a small kitchen fire, I'm pretty sure it was a cooker but I wasn't in at the time. Customers and the tenants had to leave.
"I've owned the building for 15 years and Richard has been here for three, it's such a tight knit community."
Incident commander and watch manager Sean Foster said: "We were called at 12.40pm to a severe fire at the chip shop. There were flames and a lot of thick black smoke, caused by the oil and fat.
"It was great work by the crew to get this under control and it was out by 1.10pm at the latest. The staff did a good job by turning everything off and they evacuated the customers out and the tenants left too.
"We used six breathing apparatus and one jet. All persons were accounted for on arrival."
No one is thought to have been injured.
