A PREGNANT woman jailed for sending abusive and racist text messages has walked free from court after partially winning an appeal against her sentence.

Elouise Sullivan, who is due to give birth in June, saw her 16-week jail term suspended for two years following a hearing at Southampton Crown Court yesterday.

Her solicitor cited the stress she suffered during the few days she spent in prison and the potential impact on her unborn child.

As reported in the Daily Echo, Sullivan bombarded two other women with “vile” texts after claiming they had slept with her long-term boyfriend.

Earlier this month she was jailed by district judge Lorraine Morgan at Southampton Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to two counts of sending indecent, obscene and menacing messages over a four-month period between September 2016 and January this year.

One of her victims was a woman of mixed race who was sent pictures of bananas and a monkey.

Judge Morgan told Sullivan: “The offences I’m dealing with are of the utmost seriousness. Over a long period you used the most vile language towards these two women, one of whom is still a youth.

“Of particular concern is that you used racially-offensive terms and images that were used to belittle and insult one of your victims.”

But Sullivan, 20, of Morrisey Close, Sholing, was released on bail on Monday pending her appeal and will not now return to prison.

Jonathan Underhill, representing the Crown Prosecution Service, said she embarked on a “vicious tirade” that involved a large number of messages, one of which said: “Go back to the zoo, you freak.”

Jamie Gammon, defending, conceded the “vile nature” of his client’s behaviour.

But he said the 16-week jail term imposed at the magistrates’ court was too harsh given the sentencing guidelines and her early guilty plea.

Mr Gammon added: “She is heavily pregnant and really struggled during the short period she was in custody. She was vomiting throughout and not eating properly.

“She is terrified of going back to prison.”

Mr Gammon said Sullivan had been taken to two hospitals, including one in Southampton, since she was jailed last Thurs-day.

He added: “There is concern about her health and that of her unborn baby. Her father is very worried about his daughter and potential grandchild.”

Judge Nicholas Rowland told her: “You pleaded guilty to two offences against two innocent women who found themselves on the receiving end of your behaviour, which has been described quite rightly as a vile campaign of abuse.

“It was very easy to send these messages from the safety of your own home, or wherever you were at the time.

“It was cowardly behaviour which didn’t involve you coming face to face with your victims and seeing the effect on them and their families. A custodial sentence was justified in this case.”

However, the judge said circumstances had changed since her conviction and ruled that her appeal should be allowed “in part”.

He suspended her prison sentence but imposed a 7pm-7am curfew for six months and said Sullivan would have to wear an electronic tag.

She will also have to complete a 25-day rehabilitation course that will focus on issues including anger management and victim empathy.
