Greenfield land in Hampshire has been earmarked for a development which, if approved, would see 350 homes built.

The new estate is proposed for Winnham Farm, Portchester, a site located just off Downend Road next to the M27.

A consultation by Millbrook Homes will get under way today to gauge residents’ views after which a planning application could be submitted to Fareham council later this year.

However, the plans have been met with a mixed reaction.

Shaun Cunningham, local borough councillor for Portchester East, said: “This development is not needed in Portchester, we already have our fair share of housing in the borough.

“The Fareham local plan document clearly sets out areas deemed unsuitable for development and this site is one of them.”

Councillor Nick Walker, chairman of the Fareham Borough Council planning committee, added: “The government has said, based on recent objectively assessed need and housing targets, that we need to build more than 2,000 new homes across the borough, but only 1,000 can be delivered on brownfield sites which mean greenfield sites will need to be used.”

“Winnham Farm is a suitable Greenfield site that is a reasonable size but the question is: will it get public support?”

Under the plans, the new homes will be a mix of one, two, three and four bedroom homes with 40 per cent of these expected to be affordable along with a large open space, play area, walking routes and wildlife corridors.

A statement from Miller Homes said: “We are currently undertaking pre-application discussions with Fareham Borough Council and other key stakeholders.

“Subject to the comments received through our pre-application discussions and public consultation, it is our intention to submit an outline planning application in summer 2017.

“This will follow a period of careful consideration of all the comments received during the consultation process.”

The plans are on show at Cams Hill School on Shearwater Avenue, Fareham, today from 4pm till 8pm.
