TRANSPORT fleets across Hampshire are adding their support to the fourth United Nations Global Road Safety Week.
Promoted globally under the hashtag #slowdown, this year’s event highlights the devastating impact of inappropriate speed on roads all over the world.
Speed contributes to around one-third of all fatal road traffic crashes in high-income countries such as the UK, and up to half in low and middle-income countries.
Fines for exceeding speed limits in the UK were increased significantly from April 24, to reflect the seriousness of this motoring offence.
However campaigner say educating drivers to the risks of speed, which are not always immediately apparent, is key to behaviour change within communities.
Braking distances increase significantly with just small increases in speed, as does the destructive impact energy available to deform vehicles and their occupants in the event of a collision.
Lucketts Travel, TJ Transport, Radian Housing, ACE Liftaway, Radio Taxis (Southampton), Raymond Brown, The Martins Group, Ageas, New Forest Activities, Adams Morey, Argos, Protyre, Irwin Mitchell, Hampshire County Council, are just some of the Hampshire fleets which are displaying ‘SLOW DOWN’ pictogram stickers on the back of their vehicles as daily reminders to both their own and other drivers.
Fleets wishing to support the initiative can download free sticker artwork files from hantsfire.gov.uk/project-pictogram
