IT was a multi-cultural event to celebrate the diversity of modern Britain and the patron, saint St George.

On Saturday more than 300 people attended a family fundraiser to celebrate the national day of England.

Organised by The United Voice of African Association alongside various health and wellbeing organisations.

The St George's Day Health and Wellbeing Fair in Derby Road, celebrated diversity as well as improving relations between the community and health professionals.

The free family-friendly event had henna, facepainting and bouncy castles as well as informative stalls.

Organiser and the head of The United Voices of African Association, Abdoulie Sanneh said: "It was very important for us to celebrate St George's Day, it is a big part of English culture.

"Sometimes it is difficult for health services to gain access to the community and especially ethnic minorities, so the idea was to bring the services to the people in an informal event."

There was a mixture of cultures and religions at the event which took place on April 22.

Stalls were selling food, perfumes and clothing from an array of countries.

"The event was very representative of the city on England's biggest holiday," said Dr Sanneh.

The event was closed by Mayor Cathie McEwing, on one of her last public appearances as mayor.

"It was amazing to have the Mayor at the event, it was affirmation that she wants to work with multicultural communities," said Dr Sanneh.

Also in attendance was the cabinet member for communities, culture and leisure, Cllr Satvir Kaur.
