A power cut has hit Southampton this morning, leaving residents stuck in a lift and a fire station without electricity.

Dumbleton Towers was without power and saw two people stuck in a lift this morning, before they were freed by the power company.

Engines from St Mary’s and Hightown, who themselves were without electric, attended the scene at 9.25am.

St Mary’s left the tower block shortly before 10am.

Watch manager Stuart Vince said: “It’s hit quite a big area, traffic lights were out on the way to the tower block and I know Hightown station don’t have any power.

“I’m not certain if Hightown are still at the scene but the power company had already freed the two people stuck in the lift, and we left the block at 9.55am.”

Around 100 homes were affected.

Duncan MacDonald, spokesperson for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, said: “We would like to apologise to all those affected and assure customers that we are doing everything we can to get the power back on as quickly and as safely as possible.”

The power went out at around 9.10am, and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks expect the power to be restored at around 11.30am. Engineers say the fault is with an underground cable.
