A WORLD record attempt for the largest balloon sculpture by one person has now been completed at a Hampshire shopping centre.

Southampton-based balloon artist Ben Field has attempted to break the Guinness World Record at The Brooks Shopping Centre in Winchester using more than 10,000 balloons over the course of nine days.

The 38-year-old from Mansbridge began his sculpture on May 1, and completed an enormous balloon waterfall at 85 feet high to get his name in the record books.

The sculpture was completed on May 10.

He made the sculpture in pieces in a shopping unit on the lower floor of the centre before using a lift to create a cascading waterfall from the upper floor, which flows between the balconies where the shops are located.

Ben has submitted evidence to Guinness World Records which will make a detailed assessment of his record attempt before officially awarding him the title.

Mr Field said: “Currently what we have built is bigger than the previous record but until we have got their (the Guinness World Records) approval on it we won’t know.

I am hopeful about it, but there are complicated rules – I am confident it will beat it.”

When he’s not attempting to break world records, Ben makes bespoke balloon installations and costumes for a living and runs the Hampshire-based company, Ludicrous Balloons.

He is trying to beat the record holder for the largest modelling balloon sculpture by an individual – David Baker of Cincinnati, USA, who in 2015 created a sculpture of a giant bat in hanging upside down using 3,961 balloons and measuring 21.91m by 11.22m.

The waterfall is only Ben’s second large-scale public installation.

He created ‘Hank the Orange Octopus’ to mark the opening of the movie Finding Dory in July last year for Southampton’s Cineworld.
