A STRANGER’S heroic attempts at saving a woman’s life were sadly in vain.

As previously reported by The Gazette, police confirmed that a woman’s body had been found in Winchester Street yesterday morning.

The woman, in her 30s, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

One man, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had spent the night sleeping next to her on the streets.

He said: “It was a cold night and she came over to me and asked if she could sleep next to me. I didn’t know who she was.

“I said yes, but to me she seemed so young.

“I woke up the next morning and told her friend, who also slept with us, that we had to get up.

“He called over and said she wouldn’t get up. He started shouting ‘she’s dead, she’s dead’.

“I called the ambulance at about 7.30am and the friend started doing CPR on her but she wouldn’t wake up. When the ambulance came they said she was dead.

“It was sad. The police took our statements and then I was just left on my own again on the street.”

Police officers and ambulance staff attended the scene. Police said the death is being treated as unexplained but non-suspicious. Inquiries are ongoing.
