A crash between a cow and a car caused long delays on a major Hampshire road.

The car crashed into the cow, which was on the Marchwood bypass, between Twiggs Lane and Dibden roundabout in Marchwood caused the road traffic collision.

It is not known where the cow, which died as a result of the collision, came from.

Mark Skilton, from Marchwood, was driving along Hythe Road near The Pilgrim pub when he saw the cow.

The 39-year-old told the Echo: “It was running towards Hythe, I pulled over and dialled 999.

“A car came round the corner, it was a blind corner, and hit the brakes. The cow froze, then bolted through the trees onto the bypass, where a car ploughed into it.

“I’m glad nobody was hurt. It’s shocking to see though, I’ve no idea where it came from.”

Drivers faced long delays northbound from the Dibden roundabout and from the dual carriagway southbound, but they have since eased.

Firefighters from Redbridge fire station were called to the scene at 9.01am.

It is thought only one vehicle was involved and that no one was injured.
