CRAIG David has cancelled his Ageas Bowl performance because the show 'won't work outdoors', according to the singer's team.

Instead the R&B star will play a number of dates at the Mayflower Theatre.

The surprise announcement means his show at the cricket ground on September 1 will no longer go ahead.

Instead the Southampton-born singer will play at the Mayflower Theatre on September 1, 11, 12, and 13.

Colin Lester, Craig’s manager, said this afternoon: “After the great success of his arena tour we realised this particular show would not work outdoors.

"For a better consumer experience, it has been moved to a more suitable venue that fits the particular elements of this show.

"We are not ruling out a show at the Ageas Bowl at a future date.”

An earlier statement said: "Due to circumstances unavoidable by either party, Craig David has announced he will be moving the show to a run of multiple shows at the Mayflower Theatre in September.

"Craig is really looking forward to performing in his hometown and is pleased to offer these shows in the iconic Mayflower Theatre as an alternative.

"All customers who have already purchased tickets will be contacted by their ticket agent with new ticket information for one of the shows at the Mayflower Theatre within the next 48 hours.

"Should any customers have any problems with their newly allocated ticket or be unable to attend, they should contact their point of purchase using the information in their new confirmation email and will be given a full refund."

Speaking on behalf of Craig David, Laura Sinclair said: "It's nothing to do with ticket sales."

Tickets at the Mayflower are on sale for £42.50
