CYCLISTS in Hampshire came together for a hearty breakfast following a ride to raise money towards fighting global poverty.

Nearly 60 riders attended the Christian Aid fundraiser “Big Bike to Brekkie” at Winchester Cathedral’s Paul Woodhouse suite.

The sponsored cyclists had pedalled from locations across Hampshire including Hatch Warren, Beggarwood Cycling Club in Basingstoke, Chandler’s Ford, St Luke’s Church in Hedge End and St Michael’s Church in Basingstoke.

They were rewarded for their efforts with an egg, sausage or bacon butty and hot drink of their choice on arrival.

Father Michael Smith of Immanuel Church, Hatch Warren and member of Hatch Warren and Beggarwood Cycling Club, said: “I’m delighted that our cycling club supported Big Bike to Brekkie and raised money for Christian Aid Week. Three things that are close to our hearts are cycling, charity fundraising and breakfast, so how could I resist?”

Christian Aid Week celebrates its 60th birthday this year, having raised nearly £200,000 in 2016 through a mixture of house-to-house collections, picnics, sponsored walks and Big Brekkies hosted by churches and individuals.

The Dean of Winchester, the Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, said: “I’m delighted to be able to welcome cyclists to the Cathedral in this, the 60th anniversary of Christian Aid Week.”
