It’s the strong-arm tactic that’s usually only seen after a few pints down the pub.

But now Southampton’s very own ‘army’ of wrestlers are giving you the chance to muscle in on an unusual sport.

The Southampton Arm Wrestling Squad boasts British, European and World champs within its ranks.

And experts say it’s the perfect sport for anyone of any age, weight, or size.

Squad leader Pete Bennett has been involved in the sport for the last twenty five years, after stumbling across a pub heat by chance one night.

His friends persuaded him to enter the competition - which turned out to be a qualifier for the British championships - and he came second.

Organisers recognised Pete’s talent and he trained up, becoming British champion in 1988 and holding the title for six years.

Now the Maybush dad of three has handed down his talent to his three sons - with the middle one, Jake, 22 currently holding the British title.

Now Jake, his sons and the other wrestlers in the squad are keen to get new members interested and training up.

Pete said: “It’s a great sport. Obviously you need a certain level of fitness but it’s 110 per cent determination on the table all the time.

“There are 14 different weight categories from 70kg to 110kgs, and two of our squad are just about to go to Las Vegas for a $250,000 competition.

“For me it’s not about the money though - I get no personal gain from it I just want to get people interested in the sport.”

Although initially the sport was for right handers only there are now left and right handed strands to every competition.

The squad will be outside West Quay on Above Bar on June 4 from 11am from 3pm for anyone to have a go, and they train every Tuesday in the Ice House pub in Shirley Warren from 7-9pm.

All are welcome.
