THE Flying Scotsman is back in Hampshire, giving rail enthusiasts another glimpse of one of the world’s most iconic and recognisable steam engines.

Hundreds of people lined Hampshire’s railways as it chugged through the county as part of its countryside tour earlier this week.

But for those who missed it, it will return this afternoon after departing London Victoria at 4.58pm.

It will head through Woking and towards Salisbury before travelling south to Southampton, then Winchester, Basingstoke and back to the capital.

Enthusiasts came out in force across Hampshire earlier this week, with many cramming onto Romsey railway station’s platforms as it steamed through.

Over the course of the day, the famous locomotive also passed through Southampton Docks before heading north, following the River Itchen to Eastleigh.

The train did not stop during its trip and organisers kept the exact timings secret to deter trespassers.

A safety warning was issued by rail chiefs to those wishing to catch a glimpse of the engine.

Network Rail, the British Transport Police and other industry partners have warned of the dangers of straying onto the tracks, alongside the ever-present risk of being hit by a train.

Becky Lumlock, route managing director at Network Rail, said: “Seeing Flying Scotsman passing through our spectacular countryside is a terrific opportunity, but I cannot stress enough how important it is to stay safe at all times. Never wander on to or near the tracks.

“As well as being illegal, it is incredibly dangerous if you haven’t had the correct training because you will be at risk of being hit by a train or electrocuted. I urge anyone who is planning on enjoying seeing Flying Scotsman to do so from a safe position.”

Sgt Phil Horne at the British Transport Police, added: “The Flying Scotsman tour is a very exciting event for many people and we want everyone who is looking forward to seeing the spectacular steam engine to have a great day out and stay safe.”
