A NEW festival is set to take place this weekend.

A host of performers and musicians will take to Southampton’s historic bandstand for Umbrella Arts Festival.

Organised by SoCo Music Project - who get people across the city making music - the lineup will include dozens of local acts showing their talent in Palmerston Park.

And with a grant of £8,000 from the Big Lottery fund, it is set to be another addition to the city’s cultural calendar this summer.

The one day festival will bring a diverse mixture of music, art and spoken word to Southampton as well as interactive workshops, story telling, talks, an arts market and live installations.

Local partners also include Artful Scribe, Dangerous Ideas and Solent Showcase Gallery with an overarching theme of the arts’ transformative effect on health and wellbeing.

And the free event on June 10 is aimed at the whole family.

Local artists and designers will also be selling their wares at an art market in the park on the day - which runs from 11am-5pm.

SoCo’s Matt Salvage said: “The event will showcase the incredible local talent in the city whilst providing a platform to celebrate those from all parts of the community.

“There will be lots of inspiring workshops and performances for people of all ages and backgrounds.”

It comes just weeks after Riverfest, which saw hundreds of visitors attend the one day Big Lottery funded event aimed at celebrating the river Itchen.
