HALLELUJAH! Alexandra Burke dazzled as Deloris last night - taking an already spectacular show to a whole new level.

Sister Act is back in Southampton for a two week run starring the former X Factor winner who puts in a joyous performance as the disco diva turned songstress in a habit.

Channelling her inner Whoopi Goldberg, she brings powerhouse vocals, poignancy and excellent comedy timing to the role.

The show follows the same story as the celebrated movie. It’s 1977 and nightclub singer Deloris van Cartier witnesses a murder. The key witness is put into protection in the only safe place the police can find – a convent. She’s soon taken over the dull choir rehearsals, turning the tone-deaf nuns into disco sensations and sending the dwindling church attendance through the roof.

Burke is the undoubted star of the show, but she’s ably assisted by her fellow nuns who delight in bursting into song at any moment.

Karen Mann is perfectly cast as the increasingly neurotic Mother Superior, who finds her Order suddenly full to overflowing with "celibate nuns shaking their buns" and "a priest with moves like Travolta."

All the nuns shine as they gradually ditch hymns in favour of hip hop. The soulful, joyful ensemble numbers, particularly Take Me To Heaven and Raise Your Voice, are stand out highlights.

Craig Revel-Horwood’s direction is wonderful. He places saxophones, accordions, trombones and trumpets in the hands of the cast, bringing out the funk and fun in composer Alan Menken’s infectious score.

Alice Stokoe's incredible solo as the confused Sister Mary Robert is another highlight and the delighted audience couldn't resist taking to their feet following a glittering finale medley.

Sister Act is the most divine of musical comedies, which will soothe your soul. Fabulous, baby.

Sister Act runs until Saturday June 17. Tickets: 023 8071 1811 or mayflower.org.uk
