The air ambulance was called to the scene of a crash after a cyclist was seriously injured in a crash with a car.

Redbridge Road (outbound) was closed from the Millbrook Roundabout to Redbridge Roundabout at around 6pm on Monday, with the Hampshire and Isle of White Air Ambulance landing at Green Park, in Millbrook.

A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 17.22 [on Monday] following a collision between a cyclist and a car at the above location.

"The cyclist, a 35-year-old male, sustained a serious abdominal injury as a result of the collision.

"We sent a paramedic team leader, an ambulance and the air ambulance to the scene.

"He was taken to Southampton General by road, with the air ambulance crew travelling with the patient."

A statement from Hampshire police said: "We were called at 17:36pm on Monday, June 19 to a serious injury collision between a Ford Mondeo and a cyclist on Redbridge Road in Southampton.

"The cyclist was taken to Southampton General Hospital where his condition is described as serious, but not life threatening.

"The slip road to the M271 and a section of the Redbridge roundabout were closed temporarily to allow a full investigation to take place and have subsequently re-opened."

Drivers faced delays back to onto Mountbatten Way and Tebourba Way.

Earlier on in the day, drivers faced delays of more than two hours after a crash on Redbridge Causeway.
