Hampshire County Council sent its gritters out on the county's roads last night - but it's not why you might think.

The trucks were spreading dust on the roads to soak up any excess bitumen which may have softened in the's searing heat.

The mercury hit highs of 29C, which may have caused Hampshire's road to start melting.

And with the heatwave set to continue today the gritters may be called into action again.

As reported, angry parents have hit out at a school for telling students they can't get into their shorts, despite the heatwave, while others have relaxed their uniform rules.
