A HAMPSHIRE woman has been caught up in a terror attack in Brussels.

Rhona Murphy, who works for air traffic control, was travelling through Brussels Central Station on a work trip when a man was shot by police after reportedly setting off a small explosion.

The station and nearby Grand Place in the Belgian capital were evacuated.

Ms Murphy, 53, from Ringwood, took to social media to tell friends and family she was safe.

She said: “Brussels has been a bit scary tonight. All okay though.

“Police started running, then mass panic as restaurant tables and chairs were knocked over and everyone ran.

"Shutters went down on shops.

"We went the other way but policeman yelled at us "terrorist at the station" so we had to turn back again.”

Security remains high across Brussels after a man blew up an explosive device at the city's Central Station.

The man was shot by Belgian soldiers after detonating the small device in the terror attack on Tuesday evening, and he later died. No-one else was hurt.

Central Station is reopening to passengers on Wednesday morning, with a heavy police presence.

Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said while it is important to address security concerns, it is also vital to avoid over-reacting.

He warned "against a society where we always and everywhere will be checked".

He added: "If we do that, it would be fulfilling the aim of the terrorists."

It comes just one year after 32 people died in attacks on the city, which were claimed by Islamic State.

Nobody has been injured in the incident and the condition of the man is not known.
