Thousands of people are set to hop on their bikes and take part in one of the biggest events in the Southampton calendar this weekend.

The HSBC UK City Ride will see community members and famous riders cycle the streets of the city in the free event.

The cycle, replacing the Sky Ride, is running this Sunday and is designed to give people the opportunity to ride with friends and family in a traffic-free environment.

As well as receiving backing from Olympian cyclists, some famous riders will also be attending the Southampton event.

The ride is one of a series taking place across the nation, with the first one held in Birmingham and Nottingham a fortnight ago.

Six-time Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy said the event is absolutely vital.

He said: “The key is for people to just enjoy themselves, get on their bikes and make cycling part of their everyday routine.

“It’s absolutely vital to encourage people to get back on their bikes if they haven’t ridden for a few years, or for young cyclists to get out and gain some confidence by riding out on the roads.

“The fact cycling can reduce congestion, it can reduce the pollution and improve the health of the people, it’s just so important.”

The ride will begin at Guildhall Square at 11am before cycling towards Southampton Common and back down The Avenue towards the centre, before passing the Bargate and returning to the square.

Southampton City Councillor Jacqui Rayment said the ride is one of the city’s highlight events.

Cllr Rayment, cabinet member for environment and transport said: “Southampton’s cycling culture is growing year on year. The ride strongly supports this by encouraging more people to experience cycling around the city while at the same time having a great day out with family and friends.

“The year was no exception and really is one of the city’s event highlights. Cycling is a great way of helping to improve air quality in Southampton and has some amazing health benefits too.”

As well as Olympic endorsements, community members will be cycling alongside some of Britain’s most successful BMX riders.

Former national champions, world championship contestants and former Great British Olympic team members will all feature in the form of visitors Tre Whyte, Kyle Evans and Paddy Sharrock.

The events run nationwide until September, with Newcastle the next destination on July 2.
