A HAMPSHIRE parent voiced his anger after his daughter was sent home from school for not sticking to uniform policy during the heatwave.

Louis Shepherdson said his daughter was punished “for something which is a basic human right”, as she was excluded from Wyvern College in Fair Oak, near Eastleigh, after wearing a pair of leggings instead of trousers because she felt too hot.

As previously reported by the Daily Echo, other parents voiced their anger after Wyvern College decided children should continue to wear school uniform with the exception of their blazers while other schools relaxed rules.

Wyvern College had previously told the Echo that girls always have a choice of skirt or trousers.

However, the 41-year-old from Bishopstoke said that his daughter does not feel comfortable with a skirt and he made the college aware several times.

Mr Shepherdson said that once his 15-year-old daughter Judzia arrived to school wearing leggings instead of uniform trousers she was asked to work in isolation but she refused and was sent home.

He said: “They are more worried about uniform than the health of their students.

“She’s got exams coming up and she missed a revision because of this. It’s ridiculous. They are messing up her future.”

However, a statement released by Wyvern College said: “All students and parents are aware that wearing incorrect uniform will result in the student working in isolation until the uniform is corrected. Our uniform policy allows girls either, knee length skirts, or black tailored trousers.

“The student was given several opportunities to comply with our rules, sadly she chose not to.

“Wyvern do not exclude students for incorrect uniform, she was excluded for repeatedly refusing to follow instructions from a senior member of staff.”

Mr Shepherdson has now launched an online petition to ask for the school policy to be changed during a heatwave and more than 270 people have already signed it.
