IT WAS the Southampton school where thousands of local boys saw out their high school days.

Bellemoor School nurtured thousands of pupils over it’s 41 years – including those who made the headlines throughout the 1990s.

1997 was a particularly busy year for the pupils as they raised more than £600 for Barnardo’s charity by holding both a talent contest and an inter-schools ten-pin bowling competition.

Matthew Clinic wowed the talent competition judges with a rendition of Brian Adams’ Everything I Do, I Do It For You.

That same year saw young newshounds bag a trip to the House of Commons after success in a Times Education Supplement competition.

The team, headed by joint editor Matthew Lisk, produced a paper in one day which went on to be rated in the top five of 425 entries.

The pupils saw further success when just two months later, they won an inter-schools laboratory experiment competition.

The winners not only received book tokens for themselves, but for the school too.

In late 1997, half a dozen community-minded youngsters loaded up vans with thousands of food tins bound for the city’s homeless, pictured right.

Ian Carson, Sukhdeep Gill, Daniel Miller, Philip Stansbridge, James Stuart and Andrew Wright’s efforts were delivered to St James’ Shelter and the Sunday Lunch Club.
