SOUTHAMPTON’S first Family Orchestra will take place this weekend.

The debut concert follows six months of free, open-access, family music workshops around the city from Southampton Music Hub and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

The Family Orchestra is celebrating the success of its first season with an exciting family concert at Turner Sims. The concert, which takes place on Sunday lunchtime, will see performers from the families of the Family Orchestra joined by Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s In at the Deep End ensemble: a quintet of musicians consisting of four of the lowest orchestral bass instruments — tuba, trombone, bassoon, double bass — plus percussion.

Matt Brombley, Interim Hub Manager for Southampton Music Hub, said: “We’ve seen over 25 families from across the city taking part, and it’s been incredible to hear stories of how we have inspired players of all ages. We’ve seen brand new players working alongside members of the BSO to pick up and try exciting new instruments. We’ve also seen parents and grandparents inspired by the opportunity to play with their family, dusting off old instruments to play for the first time in decades! We hope families from across the city will come and join us to see and hear the life-changing power of music!”

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra have inspired generations of music makers for more than 120 years and are thrilled to be joining the Family Orchestra for this free family concert, which aims to give families the chance to hear bass instruments as never before.
