Sam Gallagher has signed a new four-year contract at Saints.
As previously reported by the Daily Echo, the 21-year-old striker’s excellent loan spell at Blackburn, where he netted 12 times in a tough season for Rovers, has been recognised by the Saints hierarchy.
They see a role for Gallagher as part of four striking options along with Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin and Shane Long, with Jay Rodriguez due to leave for West Brom for around £14m.
Gallagher had a breakthrough season for Saints in 2013/14 but hasn’t played for the first team since.
Saints vice chairman of football Les Reed said: “The experience Sam gained last season at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship was invaluable, and it was clear to see the further improvement that he made in his game during that time. Not only did he score 12 goals but his general play was impressive and highlighted his capability.
“We believe he has many exciting years ahead of him, and that this is the ideal place for him to realise the great deal of potential that he still possesses.
“We are all looking forward to seeing Sam back here for pre-season and helping him take the next strides in his game at Southampton.”
