HAMPSHIRE residents are calling for action to be taken to stop their homes from shaking.

People living along Leigh Road in Eastleigh say they have to put up with sleepless nights due to heavy lorries rumbling past.

They said that the uneven road surface is the cause of the problem and are now urging highways bosses to sort it out.

Mike Bunker, 53, train conductor, lives on Leigh Road and said: “I can’t sleep in my own bed at the moment, I have to sleep downstairs. The house actually shakes. You can hear it cracking. My job is safety critical, so I need a good sleep to be able to do it safely.”

Mr Bunker said he has been complaining for more than two years and has now asked to be put in a temporary accommodation to allow highway authorities to carry out a survey.

“I’d like the road resurfacing, that would stop all the shaking. That would solve all the unevenness. A lot of these houses used to be offices. They’ve put so many trenches in the road,” he added.

Aaron Dyson, 48, has recently taken over the Good Companions, a pub on Leigh Road and now lives in the flat above the pub.

He said: “The noise is dreadful. The windows shake, the noise does wake me up and people sitting here outside to have a drink have to shout when lorries go by.”

Cllr Rob Humby, county council’s executive member for environment and transport, said: “The council has already been in contact with Mr Bunker to discuss his concerns which prompted a full inspection of Leigh Road to assess its condition and any contributing factors to the noise level.

“With limited funding we have to prioritise resources where roads are in need of repair across Hampshire.

“In this case, our inspection showed that there are no safety or maintenance issues that need immediately addressing, except for the damaged man hole covers.”

Cllr Humby said that one manhole cover has now been repaired and he promised that the other one will also be repaired.

Borough councillor Wayne Irish said: “It’s not fair for residents to sleep at night with this noise.”
