SAINTS legends are set to go into battle against the Royal Navy.

A team of Southampton veterans, led by Matt Le Tissier, will face off against a Royal Navy select side to commemorate a First World War battle in which 275,000 British and Canadian lives were lost.

The battle of Passchendaele took place in Belgium from 31 July, 1917 and did not finish until November of that year.

To commemorate the centurion anniversary of the battle, Eastleigh FC will be hosting the match on July 9.

The idea was the brainchild of leading physical trainer for the Navy, Dan Appleby, with the date set up to fit in with pre-season.

Funds raised will go towards the Royal British Legion.

Clare Peppiatt, from the RBL said: “As national custodians of remembrance, the Royal British Legion will be holding this charity football match to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele.

“This match is a fantastic example of a younger generation embarking upon honouring the memories of the many who died, making the ultimate sacrifice but highlighting the need to recognise the support our armed forces need today and raising money so we can deliver that.”

The match will kick off at 4pm, with a penalty shootout at half time for those entering into a raffle.

A spokesperson from the Navy said: “It is our great honour to be able to assist the RBL in participating in such a unique event, which will raise awareness of the work carried out by the RBL.

“The battle of Passchendaele saw direct involvement of the Royal Hampshire Regiment and the 63rd division, so a match-up between the Saints Legends and the RN select team is a fitting way of commemorating the south coasts’ involvement in this battle.”

Tickets will cost £3 at the gate of Eastleigh’s Silverlake Stadium.

A statement from the club said: “Eastleigh FC are extremely proud to be hosting this event in aid of the RBL.

“We will be having our annual remembrance game in November but this event helps raise awareness of the work the RBL do throughout the year.”
