A HAMPSHIRE pub has suddenly closed its doors, just 12 months after a massive revamp, due to mounting bills.

Wicor Mill on White Hart Lane in Portchester closed its doors last week, with landlord Steven Hudson blaming finances.

The Echo reported last summer that Fareham MP Suella Fernandes had joined regulars and staff to celebrate the refurbishment of one of Porchester’s iconic pubs.

The Wicor Mill had undergone a £240,000 facelift to transform it into a welcoming and family-friendly venue.

Talking about the closure, Mr Hudson said: “In May last year, we made a significant investment in the pub. Sadly, we have been unable to keep up with the bills and we have had to take a difficult decision. I wish to pass on our best to the pub’s new tenants for the future and to thank all of our customers for their support during our ownership.”

Wicor Mill reopened last July, with the renovation giving the Portchester pub a traditional feel combining the two rooms which were originally separate, and dedicated areas for a sports bar and dining. It was also given new signage and lighting along with a play area and seating.

Councillor Shaun Cunningham, who represents Portchester on Fareham Borough Council said: “The pub is a vital asset to the local community and serves a local need, I hope the company takes on new landlords.”

Punch Taverns confirmed the closure and said it potentially had new publicans lined up to take on the venue. It said it hoped it could be reopened in a matter of weeks, however there was no exact date given for the reopening.

A spokesperson for the company added: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this has caused to the customers of the Wicor Mill.”
