SHE’S the volunteer campaigning for better diabetes services.

Now, Angie Whitmarsh from Southampton has scooped an award from a leading charity for her tireless work.

Angie, a former police officer for Hampshire Constabulary, was presented with the Supporting Others award at Diabetes UK’s Inspire Awards.

Angie joined the Southampton and District Diabetes UK group in 2010 and became chair in 2015.

She said: “I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2005 when I was in my 40s and decided to join the group after seeing a local ad.

“It was a great source of information and comfort to me at a difficult time. I’m proud of the work we’ve done as a group.

“We’ve gone from strength-to-strength with attendance on the increase while access to diabetes services has also improved locally. There are 12,000 people living with diabetes locally and as a group, we offer an important service to the community.

“Many people have told us how invaluable the advice is from healthcare professionals who speak at the meetings. So if you don’t know about us, please come along and take part.”

Charlotte Harrison-Webb, Diabetes UK regional fundraiser in the South East, said: “Through our Inspire Awards we thank our hard working volunteers, like Angie, for their contributions and highlight the positive difference their work has made.”
