‘MINDLESS’ yobs who pelted busy buses with rocks have left the operator considering changing one of its main city routes.

Four First Bus vehicles have suffered damage along one road in Lordshill, with windows being smashed in.

As a result the firm is now thinking of avoiding the area altogether.

City councillor for Lordshill, Don Thomas, said: “It is sickening to think of the potential outcome which could so easily happen with the madness of throwing missiles at a moving bus – let alone the inconvenience to users.”

A statement from the bus company said: “Following persistent vandalism targeting buses through Lordshill Way, First Southampton is considering re-routing its ‘City Red The Three’ and 12 services to avoid the area.

“Earlier this week, three First Southampton vehicles sustained broken windows while travelling along Lordshill Way after being targeted by vandals throwing rocks.

“This led to the bus operator terminating services at Aldermoor Heath Centre and diverting others around the area.”

Another incident took place yesterday on Aldermoor Road, again causing more damage to the windows of one of the buses.

Simon Goff, First Southampton general manager, said: “The last thing we want to do is inconvenience our passengers, as we know many of them rely on our buses.

“But we will not tolerate the actions of a mindless minority of individuals that vandalise our buses. The safety of our passengers and drivers is paramount and we will take the necessary action if this continues.”

The City Red The Three service runs from Lordshill past Southampton General Hospital, into the city centre before heading through Woolston and Sholing. Route 12 also passes the hospital, into Millbrook, Shirley and the city centre.

Police said they would be focusing patrols in the area. Inspector Paul Southam said: “Not only does this cause damage to the vehicles, but there is a very serious risk of lives being put in danger, as this could lead to a significant road traffic collision.”
