OLI Bailey netted twice against his old club as Winchester City opened their home pre-season programme with a 3-2 win over Gosport Borough.

It was the first chance for Citizens’ fans to run the rule over manager Craig Davis’ summer signings and it’s fair to say that no one went home disappointed.

After Jack White had headed City into an early lead, Bailey – who left Privett Park just a matter of weeks ago – doubled Winchester’s advantage.

Chilton Vine’s shot on the turn made it 2-1 at half-time before Bailey struck again with a cracker into the roof of the net.

Gosport replied again following dogged work by Liam Kimber, but Winchester held out for the win their neat passing football deserved.

It took Bailey's pre-season goal tally to three in two games, having already scored - along with Brett Stanley - in a 2-2 draw at Romsey Town.

“I was very happy with the work-out,” said boss Davis.

“We just wanted them to go out tonight and work hard, express themselves and show what they are about as footballers. Not perfect by any means, but a good step in the right direction of what we want to do.”

Injuries to White and Dan Williamson were the only down side to City’s night, but Davis is confident they are not too serious.

While conscious of not going overboard about one result, director of football Dave Malone said: “Praise where praise is due – a well-deserved victory against a much-changed Gosport Borough.

“Make no mistake, we will have a solid and competitive team this season.”

Winchester’s Evo-Stik South West rivals AFC Totton went down 1-0 at Fawley AFC.

Ben Bolton’s first-half goal proved the difference between the sides.

Totton return to action on Tuesday at home to National League outfit Aldershot Town. That fixture has a changed kick-off time of 7.15pm.

Winchester are at home on Tuesday (7.45pm) to Hungerford Town of the National League South.
