A MAN has died in a house fire in a Hampshire neighbourhood.

Emergency services were called to Escombe Road, Bishopstoke, at about 6.50am yesterday and Hampshire Fire and Rescue sent three engines to the scene.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: "Sadly a man died in the property and nobody else was believed to be in the house.

"A file will be prepared for the coroner in due course.

"We are working with our colleagues at HFRS to investigate the circumstances of the fire, but we do not believe these to be suspicious at the current time."

One resident, who didn't want to be named, said she went to school with the man who was killed in the fire.

She said: "He was a lovely chap who wouldn't have hurt a fly. It's so sad that this has happened here.

"There were three fire engines and two ambulances, and the police haven't long left."
