EMERGENCY services were called to Southampton Airport this morning after a plane suffered a suspected cracked windscreen in mid-air.

A Flybe aircraft, which was carrying 58 passengers, landed at about 8am.

Fire crews raced to the scene, with engines from St Mary’s, Redbridge and Eastleigh attending.

The flight company has now confirmed that while a pilot believed there may have been a crack, this was not the case.

A statement from the airport said: “We can confirm that an incident with an aircraft was reported on approach to the airport.

“The airport took a precautionary measure to alert emergency services. The aircraft landed safely and the incident was stood down.”

Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed that no action was taken, and that their presence on scene was to ensure safety for all involved.

A Flybe spokeswoman said: "The above flight landed safely without incident at Southampton this morning with a suspected cracked windscreen.

"The captain took the necessary action and, as a usual precautionary measure, the airport put its emergency vehicles on standby.

"The safety of its passengers and crew is the airline’s number one priority and Flybe apologises for any inconvenience experienced."
