A HISTORIC Hampshire landmark undergoing a multi-million pound renovation is to have a new roof signed by members of the public.

Royal Victoria Country Park in Netley was once the site of the world’s largest military hospital, but now only the iconic chapel remains.

Following work over the last year, the roof will soon be laid but over two weekends, the public will have the chance to make their mark and “sponsor a slate” for a small donation.

This weekend and next you can write a message on a slate which will then form part of the chapel.

David Stubbington of Elliotts Premier Roofing said: “The idea behind the slate signing is to help the Friends of Royal Victoria Country Park raise additional funds for the running of the park and it allows the community to be a part of the restoration project.

“As one of the oldest firms in Southampton, it’s been a privilege for us to work with other local organisations to restore this iconic chapel.”

Conservation work on the chapel has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund grant and Hampshire County Council funding worth a total of £3.2million and is due to be complete in the summer of 2018. The event is from 10am to 4pm.
