A GROUP of Romsey schoolchildren helped raise hundreds of pounds to buy food for those less fortunate.

Year 2 children from Halterworth School had been raising the cash through sponsorship of their Acts of Kindness both at home and in school over a period of three weeks.

Between them they a total of £650, smashing the proposed target of £360.

The pupils then visited Waitrose in Romsey as part of the social action project to purchase food items.

When the children arrived at Waitrose, they were greeted by Jo Topley from Romsey Food Bank, whom the school know well from our regular contributions through harvest festival collections.

She provided shopping lists for the children to purchase specific items. The excited group then dashed around the supermarket, calculators in hand, adding up how much they had spent. The items were then scanned through the checkouts and then handed over to Jo who will now distribute to needy families in the Romsey area via Romsey Food Bank.

Jo was amazed at how much

money had been raised and after the shopping was all paid for, commented that there was still enough for a second shopping visit in the coming weeks.

Class teachers Debbie Mayo and Phil Young said: “We have been blown away with the fantastic effort the children have put into our project and they are proud that they have been able to give something back to our local community. We would also like to thank Waitrose for their patience and support during our ‘interesting’ shopping trip.”

The school has been committed to social action projects this year and members of the public can see the whole school’s projects as they will be on display at Romsey Town Hall in September.
