SOUTHAMPTON AC speed machine Oli Bromby was narrowly denied a second medal at the European Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy.

Having pocketed individual 100 metres bronze, the 19-year-old from Shirley had been hoping to make the podium again in the men's 4x100m relay.

After clocking a quick 39.38 seconds to win their heat, the Great Britain quartet of Dom Ashwell, Bromby, Kristian Jones and Eden Davis again combined well in the final.

But their 39.67 time was just 0.08 short of bronze in fourth spot as the three teams ahead of them - Germany, Italy and Spain - all set records to deny them.

Hampshire's Mair Edwards, a student at Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke, was part of GB's bronze medal-winning women's 4x400m relay quartet (3.33.68).

It meant the British squad equalled their best ever European Junior Championships haul of 19 medals.
