A GREEN area in Eastleigh has been officially opened following a major revamp.

Dozens of residents turned out to Grantham Green, when the mayor of the town, Cllr Maureen Sollitt cut the ribbon and officially opened the green space.

New trees, shrubs and wildflower have been planted and new paths have been created, as part of a major project which will also see a rock-climbing feature and picnic tables to be installed in the area.

Dozens of residents turned out to the park to take part in the official opening ceremony and enjoy the big green picnic organised by the Friends of Grantham Green.

Karen Springham, one of the members of Friends of Grantham Green, said: “ It’s brilliant. It will help to bring the community together. It’s a big change for people who have lived in the area for a long time.

“The area is much more accessible now. I would like to thank the council for the support.”

Despite the rain, residents who turned out had the opportunity to enjoy live music and get involved in several activities including face-painting and arts and crafts.

More improvements to the area are expected to be made in the next months.

Work on constructing a fully fenced five-a-side football and basketball court will start in the autumn, along with bulb planting.

Meanwhile, detailed design of the picnic tables and benches is under way, some of which draw inspiration directly from drawings and models produced by pupils from nearby Cherbourg and Norwood Schools.
