POLICE have launched an investigation after a man was kicked and beaten by a gang of yobs in a Southampton street.

A 33-year-old man suffered head injuries which were considered serious but not life threatening, say police.

The gang also stole the man's wallet during the attack which took place between 8.30pm and 11pm on Monday in a green space between Carey Road and Bursledon Road.

The victim could not say how many youths attacked him or how old they were.

PC Rebecca Day, of the Western Investigation Team, said: "Do you live in Carey Road or Bursledon Road and did you see or hear anything suspicious on Monday night? Were you visiting Antelope Park? You could have information that can help us progress this investigation. Please get in contact."

Bitterne councillor John Jordan told the Echo: "This was a very unpleasant and violent incident, although thankfully the victim’s injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Anyone who knows anything this vicious attack should contact the police immediately, as it’s really important that the attackers be caught and brought to justice."

If anybody has any information relating to the case, they are advised to contact police call 101 quoting reference '44170285087', or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The incident follows a robbery earlier this month in St Mary's on Monday, July 3rd where a 30-year-old man had his phone stolen after being threatened by an unknown man who was carrying a knife in St Mary’s churchyard between 3am and 4am.

Police have issued advice to residents to safe particularly when out at night:

- Stick to busy, well-lit areas, look self-confident and walk with purpose;

- Consider places of safety along your route, such as a friend’s house or shops, where you could seek help if necessary;

- Keep your purse, wallet, money and valuables out of sight;

- Keep bags closed, zipped and buckled;

- Avoid walking and talking on your mobile phone;

- Wear your bag across your chest, so that it can’t be pulled from your shoulder;

- Carry only the amount of money that you need;

- Stay with your friends, you are more likely to be a target on your own.
