HE HAS not even reached his teens but is already a musical sensation.

Jay Fitzgerald has been wowing music-lovers with his public renditions of pop classics.

The Redbridge Community College pupil started playing the piano just a few years ago at the age of eight.

Now he has been amazing shoppers by playing the piano at Southampton’s Westquay shopping centre.

With his renditions of jazz classics and themes from Japanese manga comics, he’s fast becoming a star.

He said: “I just really like making people happy. That’s all I care about.”

Jay, 12, gets up early to go to school and practise from 7am every morning before lessons, and is already playing jazz, classical and rock with school friends and at home.

Dad Sasha, a bathroom fitter, said: “I’ve been buying him keyboards for a few years now, and he keeps on wanting the next one and the next one.

“My brother and dad both play the guitar – and I’m really proud of him.

“It makes him happy and he just loves to practise.”

Now a video filmed by step dad Mike Turner, a delivery driver, has been posted on social media.

Jay, from Millbrook, said: “I just can’t believe it. One day I’m just playing the piano and the next the Daily Echo want to speak to me. I used to go to my uncle Owen’s recording studio when I was about four and people there started introducing me to music.

“And at school we’ve taken part in a project where we play pop jazz and classical and mix it all up together.“But people have been buying me instruments all the time and everyone is just so supportive.”

Jay’s inspiration comes from American jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and American rock band Panic At The Disco, as well as South Korean pop outfit BTS.

His current favourite band are Britain’s Catfish and the Bottlemen, who scored a number one album with The Ride last year.

Mum Lisa Turner said: “He just sits for hours in his bedroom watching Youtube videos and teaching himself.

“He’s only had a few lessons.”

Jay added: “I want to be a music teacher when I grow up, write my own songs and share music with everyone.”
