A HAMPSHIRE community marked the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death by devoting a day to the celebrated novelist.
Events were held at Netley Abbey, where Jane is reputed to have found inspiration for Northanger Abbey.
A 90-minute guided walk about the abbey was followed by a display by The Duke of Wellington’s Dancers, a Regency group based on Southampton.
A hog roast was followed by a performance of Pride and Prejudice by the Hamble Players Youth Theatre.
The day also featured an inter-village rounders game, with Netley taking on Bursledon.
Jane lived in Chawton, where she wrote and revised six of her most famous novels, before moving to Winchester. She died in 1817 and was buried in the city’s cathedral.
