A HAMPSHIRE science park is set for a major jobs boost.

Promega, which specialises in scientific research, has struck a multimillion-pound deal to build a new headquarters building at the University of Southampton Science Park in Chilworth, creating 50 new jobs.

The company will build a new office premises at the Benham campus on the Chilworth site under a long-term land agreement.

Derek McCall, Promega’s managing director, said: “Our vision is to create a working environment, from both an appearance and sustainability viewpoint, which our employees are proud to work within.

“More than this, our new laboratory and training facility will enable us to host customer visits and to reach out to the wider community in terms of local colleges and schools to provide training on applications and technologies in biological research.

“We hope to enthuse the next generation of life scientists.”

Originally, the company opened a site at the science park in 1989, but in recent years, an increase in demand meant that more space was required to grow its team of scientists and administrative staff.

Under the plans, Promega’s new 18,000 sq ft premises will provide enhanced space for laboratory work and training as well as provide a more open plan environment for workers.

The company, founded in Wisconsin in 1978, provides innovative solutions and technical support to scientists in governmental, academic and industrial sectors.

It has a portfolio of more than 3,500 products covering the fields of protein analysis and expression, cellular analysis and genetic identity.

Peter Birkett, pictured left, CEO of the Science Park, said: “There have been very few land deals of this magnitude and significance in the South Coast region in the last decade and everyone associated with the Science Park is delighted with this news.”

Councillor Simon Letts, leader of Southampton City Council, added: “The decision to construct a new bespoke facility highlights the pivotal role the science park plays in attracting innovative companies to the region, and further strengthens Southampton’s growth in the life sciences sector.”

Construction work on the site is set to begin in February 2018 after the plans were approved by Test Valley Borough Council earlier this month.
