SALISBURY FC’s new striker Mark Francis has hit the ground running, scoring on his debut for the Whites, in their 5-0 win over Mangotsfield United.

The forward also netted three times in pre-season, but has said he is glad to get off the mark with his new club.

The former Wantage Town striker scored 18 times last season and is looking to be influential in Salisbury’s promotion bid this season.

In an interview with JournalSport Francis said: “It was great to get a goal on the opening day, it gives you good confidence going into the next game and it’s always important to start the season well.

“We create a lot of chances so, hopefully, many more to come.”

He added: “I want to be influential in getting the team promoted and score lots of goals.

“I’d like to try and get 25 to 30 this season at Salisbury with the amount of chances we create.”

The striker had a few offers on the table during the summer, from North Leigh and Wantage wanted him to stay but Francis chose the Ray Mac because of the club’s stature.

He said: “I decided to sign at Salisbury because of how big a club it is and the direction in which the club is aiming for.

“It’s a club that’s run very professionally and it’s good to be in that sort of environment where everything is done properly.”

Francis will be looking to link up with fellow new signing Marvin Brooks as the pair hope to fire Salisbury to promotion glory. “I think me and Marvin will be good together,” said Francis.

“He is very good in the air and someone I can play off.

“We showed in the last game we played together, against Basingstoke, that we link up well.”

The frontman believes that the season is a marathon and not a sprint and thinks it’s good to have a large squad and people fighting for positions.

“It’s a long season, and you’re bound to get injuries and suspensions throughout the season,” said Francis.

He added: “So if we are going to achieve promotion we need a strong squad and people fighting for places.”
