PAGANS from across the south coast gathered in the heart of Southampton to celebrate at their summer pride festival.

Revellers of all ages formed a parade that weaved its way up from The Bargate into Palmerston Park for The Pagan Pride South Summer Festival. The family day, in its second year, featured drummers, musicians and performers, as well as a range of stalls selling everything from clothing to tarot readings.

Many pagans revere gods and goddesses found in pre-Christian and classical mythology and recognise the divine in multiple guises. Some identify with particular expressions within Paganism such as witches, druids, heathens or forms of Shamanism, others with ancient Celtic or indigenous beliefs.

Arietta Bryant, 37, from Southampton, visiting the festival with her friend Annabel Hydemarsh, 36, said: “This is the second year we have come to this. I think Paganism is about living sympathetically with nature and being aware of your impact on the planet.

“It’s a green lifestyle but there is a very wide spectrum of beliefs, and for some it is very personal.”
