THE Port of Southampton created waves on the internet when they enjoyed done of their busiest weekends this month with ten cruise ships docking over a two-day period.

A photograph by DP World employee Andrew Sassoli-Walker showing the cruise ships processing into the port caused a social media sensation. On Facebook it reached 100,000 people and was shared 635 times.

During the weekend of August 19-20 nearly 55,000 passengers passed through the port as Norwegian Jade, Queen Mary 2, Navigator of the Seas, Mein Shiff 1, Azura, Queen Elizabeth, Arcadia, Independence of the Seas, Braemar and Aurora came in.

Every time a cruise ship docks it is estimated to boost the economy by up to £2.5m.

In September, cruise calls in Southampton will exceed all of the other English ports combined.
